Newcastle C&S Season Ends On A High

Saturday the 6th of March saw the last competition round of the Newcastle City & Suburban Cricket Association. My club team Valentine Eleebana took on the might of the Snake Gully Hotel. In a game of many highlights the boys came up second best to this bunch of elite athletes. The boys play their semi final this weekend & we wish them luck.

I put this little jpeg together dedicated to a great bunch of blokes. In a season which saw a combination of pirates, bat throwers & tantrums (& that is only from one team) it was great to finish on a high, this is what weekend sport is all about. Good luck tomorrow boys if you make the grand final we will come & watch you

Hansel Call It A Day

I can't believe it. After 18 months Hansel have called it a day playing a farewell show at "the Lass" on Saturday night. The boys played a killer gig or so I am told going out on a high. Winding Creek Photography has worked closely with the boys over the past 12 months culminating in shooting the photography for their recently released album Never Say Die which is sure to become a collectors item. Lead singer Jett Jones is of to pursue his other career as a doctor for the time being.We can only hope there will be a few more "one offs" in the future, gigs that is.

In the meantime Winding Creek will release some photographs of the boys via the blog to support them.

The moral of the story is get your work out there for people to see. I have spent the past few months trying this philosophy & it seems to be working. Of late I have had positive comments from a number of sources & I am sure if I maintain the momentum there may be more to come, I am not saying this to big note myself just to believe. Recently I had the photograph below posted on Keith Urban's website. There is no hiding I think he is one of the best artists Australia (via New Zealand) has produced. I was lucky enough to catch him in concert late last year playing to packed houses throughout Australia.

I did a pre-wedding shoot with Kristilee & Jeff yesterday. The weather was poor with rain & wind but it didn't dampen the spirit of this fantastic couple. With the wedding only a week away & Jeff's Harley in tow it made a fantastic scene in front of one of Newcastle's icon's. I can't wait until next weekend it's going to be a sensational day.

The Girl From Impanema Lights Up The Floor On Saturday Night

Well it was a practice wedding that promised everything & delivered on Saturday night Michelle & Alex are due to be married in Brazil in a couple of weeks time. Sadly most of their Australian friends cannot make it. So why not hold a wedding here a practice for the big event complete with a makeshift father of the bride, a loud objector basing his objection on Brazilians being great lovers & they should share themselves with many women. The ceremony concluded with a stolen kiss to the bride & groom by a small man with very large hair. What better way to go out then exchange rings to the ring of fire.

This is by far one of the best weddings I have covered.

Halle Grace gives a reason to celebrate new years eve every year

Susan & Paul are great people on new years eve at 14.41 beautiful baby Halle Grace arrived into the world weighing only 1580 grams. Paul & Susan asked me to do some baby photographs of this precious little girl. As I have said before the pregnancy baby photographs are really not my area of expertise but why not, lets give it a go. I have included a film clip of the shots. All photographs taken with my 5D Mark 11 with natural light. Happy for any comments on the shots especially from the baby photographers. Despite the miserable weather surrounding Newcastle this afternoon the sun shinned in the tent at the Queenswarf Brewery. Playing a mixture of songs from their studio album Gravity and some classic favourites thrown in Karen, Lyn and Kate showed the local audience why they are one of the most popular up and coming acts in Australian country music. I was lucky enough last night to be one of the 600 people who got to see 3 of Australia's best female country artists on stage on one evening. Working under the name songbirds Beccy Cole, Gina Jeffreys and Sara Storer demonstrated how lucky we are in this country having talent like this so close at hand (2 of the 3 live on the Central Coast). For me personally it was great to see Gina Jeffreys back on stage again. Playing songs from their own personal collection plus a number of other favourites it demonstrated clearly country music is very much alive and well in Australia. Ian Moss Shows He Is Still Australia's Best Guitarist

Well he built us up and then he tore us down. In a near 2 hour set last night at the Belmont 16 Footers Ian Moss was by far the king of the mountain.Arriving with a tight 3 piece band Moss was in charge of the sell out crowd. Starting the evening with an acoustic touch Moss moved from telephone booth to choir girl and a nice take on the classic my baby. Moss also introduced the audience to tracks from his new album Soul on West 53rd. Culminating the evening Moss continued with crowd favourites Tuckers Daughter and Bow River. Overall an excellent evening of memories and a style that must surely be the envy of musicians half his age, thanks Mossy for the memories.

It would be unfair to do a write up without mentioning Mossy's worthy support Wes Carr played a solo acoustic set that proved his future in the music is secure with a true master touch to his guitar playing. It would be unfair to draw a parallel to a young Ian Moss playing guitar with a band called Cold Chisel in the early eighties. The highlight for me was Carr's version of the Dylan classic all along the watchtower.

Michelle modelled for us on Tuesday night under the watchful eye of Ric Woods. It was the last in a 5 week course in which I have learn't so much. Michelle was a fun person who had a great ease and comfort in from of the camera. Thank you so much Michelle for your time.

Australia looses one of its finest entertainers

Last week Australia lost one of its finest entertainers. The “lanky yank” as he was affectionately known to his peers died aged 75. I was searching through my archives and came across this photograph I took back in 1986 at a Vietnam Veterans concert held at the Domain in Sydney. Pictured next to Don Lane is Frankie Lane. Both artists were strong supporters of the soldiers in Vietnam having toured there as entertainers a number of times

An old friend drops in for a visit

Talk about the bull and the calf, one of Australia’s greatest musicians is back in town on the 31st of October. Ian Moss almost calls Newcastle his second home especially from his Cold Chisel days and the Mawson Hotel at Caves beach or should we call it the Caves Beach Hotel now www.cavesbeachhotel.com.au. Having seen “Mossy” many times over the years this time he teams up with Australian Idol winner Wes Carr who you could argue is serving his trade under the master. I took some shots of Ian last year at the Belmont 16 Footers (see below) I look forward to seeing some fellow fans on Saturday the 31st of October at Belmont.

Hansel shine in first outdoor show in 3 months & album photoshoot

It was a huge day no question beginning at 12.00 and finishing around 8.00pm that night, was it worth it? you bet it was. What am I talking about let me tell you. The afternoon began with a short concert at the Darby Street Fair. Jet and the boys put on a great show consisting of about 5 songs including a modern take on the Van Halen classic “jump”. I had the valuable assistance of my mate Gavin Smith with me on this one its was great to work with him again. I have included some photos of Jet and the boys live in concert. From there is was back to my studio to do the bands album and promotional shots. The boys had fun and so did I. We culminated the day at the Oblisk with some late sunset shots. It was a great day, thanks to the boys for their commitment I sure hope you are happy with the outcome I know we are.

These photographs were taken last Tuesday night while I was doing a course with Ric Woods renowned Newcastle artist and photographer. What a night, I learnt so much and Ric is always willing to teach the course goes for 5 weeks and sadly we have only two to go. A big thanks to Maree for modelling and playing up for the camera any television producer would sign her in an instant. Thanks so much Ric for lending us your expertise for the night it is really appreciated. Maree you were fantastic.

Hansel “So Hot Now”

The boys really are as they have been spending time cutting their new album Newcastle’s glam rockers headed by Jett and his brother Thruster are about to complete their first album. Catch the boys in action complete with hair and spandex on Darby Street this weekend October 18th from 1.00pm. Following this “pathway gig” Winding Creek Photography is going to do an album cover shoot with them it should be fun.

The boys have a motto “Five dudes bound by an oath of rock ‘n’ roll.

Hunter New England Retrieval Service growing momentum.

They are the team that no one really knows flying in a machine that is famous throughout the world. The doctors and nurses from the John Hunter Intensive Care Unit make up the bulk of the HNEHS. These highly skilled professionals manage and retrieve critically ill adults and children from all over the Upper Hunter and up as far as Coffs Harbour and even beyond. The team comprises a senior doctor and a highly trained ICU registered nurse. They work very closely together to make the patient stable enough to transport. Speaking of transport the teams uses a combination of the NSW Ambulance Service and Westpac Rescue Helicopter

In its 35 year history The HNERS (formally known as the John Hunter Retrieval Service and even the Newcastle Retrieval Service located at the Royal Newcastle Hospital) had never had a formal photograph taken. Winding Creek was commissioned to undertake the mammoth task of shooting an entire retrieval team on the John Hunter Hospital Pad together with 2 helicopters. The pressure was on it costs about $1000.00/hour to run these machines and they wont come back for seconds. The result was fantastic some of the shots you can see below. A 1.2 meter panoramic now is home in the hallway of the John Hunter ICU. I would personally like to thank Jamie Bisson, Ian Gill and Janet Maher from the HNERS and the boys from Westpac you were all nothing short of fantastic.

I have had a number of people comment and contact me about my music photographs from the past 28 years. I am happy to put some more on the blog and I am more than happy to hear your comments. Perhaps you were at a gig or better still you were part of the gig the shots came from. Please remember the conditions for most of them an 80’s mosh pit well it had the sweat and heat of what was to become a mosh pit. My poor pentax got more than its fair share of showering with beer and even Jimmy Barnes’s vodka at one stage. It was dropped in the mud at Narara only to be scraped out (yes scraped) and used the next day and for many years after that. Let me pause for a moment, wipe away a tear, oh yes the memories enjoy. More to come in future weeks

Perfect day for a perfect couple the weather puts on a treat for Jess & Adams wedding

What a great day last Saturday was. Perfect weather, relaxed and friendly atmosphere and a wonderful bride and groom. The day began with a pre-wedding shoot at Jess’s parents house on a beautiful acreage at Medowie. The ceremony was conducted by Father Bill Burston at St Columbians Church in Church Street Mayfield. After the ceremony family location photographs were taken at the church and location shots were done at King Edward Park, The Bogey Hole, Nobby’s and finally on the wharf out the front of Harbourview. Matt Finish rock at the bay

Although committed to a wedding on the Saturday afternoon and evening I still managed to catch a set of the boys at Warners at the bay www.warnersatthebay.com.au on Saturday night. I have always had a passion for three piece bands tight, no room for error and no one to carry anyone. Believe me on Saturday night none of this was even remotely evident. Original band member John Prior led the charge with some fantastic work on the drums. Surely in reflection he must be one of the best drummers the country has produced over the past 25 years, I am no music critic but I think I have seen live bands to make this comment.

The one exciting aspect of the evening is the boys were really enjoying themselves. In a time where many bands should hang up their instruments and voice before entering a retirement village these boys are fresh, talented and dare I show my age and say “entertaining”. Check out some of the photos below from the Saturday night gig. Short note was the last song of the evening (how fitting) a brief moment with eyes closed and you could drift back to a time when Matt Moffit had an unique stage presence with the band but this is 2009 and the current band is well worth seeing. I hope this is not a one of for the boys but they make Newcastle a regular haunt without a doubt I will be going to see them next time. Jess & Adam ready, set & can’t wait to go

Jess Dawe & Adam Martin are pumped and ready for their big wedding on Saturday the 5th of September at St Columbans Church in Church Street Mayfield. Following the ceremony the reception will be held at Harbourview on Queens Warf. From a casual friendship where they met whilst working at Dominoes Pizza to a romance that has lasted 10 years Jess and Adam are no doubt made for each other. Following their wedding this special couple are honeymooning in Europe for eight fantastic weeks. As you can tell Winding Creek are very excited to be photographing this special event.

As a preview to the day I took them to the beautiful Somersby Falls on the Central Coast the result as you can see below was magic a special couple made for each other.

A bit of music nostalgia on Winding Creek

A longtime before Winding Creek Photography & Art was created I use to spend most of my nights chasing local, national and international bands photographing as many as I could. There were many a night at the old Newcastle Workers Club I was up the front being covered in everything from a patrons beer to Jimmy Barnes and his vodka. They were truly wonderful days and I am proud to be a part of what is now music history. About 6 months ago a mate of mine made a suggestion, why not put your photos on the website and show everyone what it use to be like. This started me thinking what a great idea, so began the task of working up these old photographs, scanning and doing the odd bit of touching up. I looked at my collection over 2000 photographs needless to say it will be a work in progress. You can check out some of my work on the website, be sure to bookmark it and return often as I am going to constantly update this part of the website. This should at best bring back some great memories for some of Newcastle’s (and Australia for that matter) 40 plus age bracket, enjoy.

One of Australia’s great 80’s pub bands are at last back again in Newcastle

Saturday the 5th of September is a special day at 8.00pm at Warners at the Bay one of Australia’s great 80’s pub bands makes a long awaited return to Newcastle.Matt Finish were formed in May 1978 by Matt Moffit and John Prior. Sadly the music industry lost Matt Moffit in 2003. John together with a number of great artists have kept the pub band dream and memories alive. Best known for that classic song “Short Note” Matt Finish were one of the most sort after pub bands in the early 80’s. Anyone seeking a modern fix of Matt Finish or people wanting to taste what a true pub band of the 80’s was like check out the boys on Saturday Evening the 5th of September, the cost of the gig wait for it free.

Hunter Christian Football Association wraps up season with a grand final extravaganza at Maitland Park on Saturday.

On Saturday the 29th of August 2009 Winding Creek Photography & Art was asked to cover the Hunter Christian Football Association Grand Finals which were held at Maitland Park. Twenty two teams including 4 women’s teams battled out eleven grand finals over the course of the whole day. The games were very competitive and played in a fantastic spirit.
